If you did an upgrade install to get to your current version, consider doing a clean install instead. If you are still using the beta (7000) rather than the Release Candidate (7100) you should back up your data and do a clean install (not an upgrade install) to ensure maximum stability and compatibility. You should also run the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (if you haven't already) to ensure you have the latest compatibility fixes. I may be mistaken, but I think for a 32-bit OS you need to put the file into system32, not system. I get no error, but the game doesn´t start MindedCobr: I tried this on my windows 7 32bit and still doesn´t work. Given that my other PCs are running Linux, I'm sympathetic to the suggestion that files from are themselves viral, but at least you can be moderately confident that they'll be as "untainted" as DirectX was designed to be. I suspect that is probably kosher, but part of the reason I use GOG is to avoid trojan-like DRMs. This finally got the game to run on Vista 64bit for me. Open Aug2005_d3dx9_27_x86 (the 32bit v27 version), and copy d3dx9_27.dll to the TOCA 3 folder (the one containing rd3.exe).
It in turn unpacks into over 100 files (AFAICT an extended version history of DX), including a bunch of CAB archives.
That will download "directx_nov2008_redist.exe". (need to use IE, and need to have "Genuine Advantage" authentication) With some direction from Peter in GOG support I found archival DirectX files here: I'm always leery of getting DLL's from an "unofficial" source.
